Coroner Division

On January 3, 2011, the operations of the Marin County Coroner’s Office became a function on the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. During this consolidation of services the Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division was created. The Coroner Division is a component of the Sheriff’s Office Administration and Support Services Bureau. The Coroner Division is located at 1600 Los Gamos Dr., Suite #205 in San Rafael, and consists of one Chief Deputy Coroner, three Coroner Investigators, and one Office Assistant.

The Coroner Division conducts their investigations to determine the cause, manner, and circumstances of deaths meeting criteria as defined in 27491 of the California Government Code.

The Coroner Division is open to the public Monday through Friday: 8:00am to 12:00pm & 1:00pm to 4:00pm

On occasion, Coroner Division personnel may be away from the office conducting investigations or other follow up.  If you need to urgently speak with an investigator, please contact the Marin County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center and ask for an investigator to be paged, (415) 473-2311.  If you are planning on coming to the office to pick up copies of reports or property, we encourage you to contact  the Coroner Division prior to doing so in order to insure someone is in the office (415) 473-6043.

• The Coroner Division is a component of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office whose mission is to complete competent and timely medicolegal forensic investigations of all deaths occurring within Marin County as specified in California Government Code §27491. It is our mission to provide timely and accurate answers to survivors concerning the deaths of their loved ones.
• Property release appointments: Please call 415-473-6043 or email coroner@marinsheriff.org to collect property during regular Office hours: MON-FRI 0800-1200 and 1300-1600 hours. 
• Report requests: Please email the Coroner Division at coroner@marinsheriff.org to request a copy of a coroner report.
• Release of Authorization for Disposition of Remains and / or Property:  This document may be completed by the legal next of kin to allow another individual to act on his or her behalf.  This document must be accompanied by a copy of the legal next of kin's government-issued identification (such as a driver license or passport).
• The Coroner Division does not provide or produce death certificated.  Death certificates are available at the Marin County Office of Vital and Statistics.
• Private academic forensic autopsy examinations may be completed upon request as requested by the legal next of kin with the associated fees borne by the requesting party for cases, which do not fall under the jurisdiction of the Coroner Division (California Government Code §27520) Please contact the Coroner Division for additional information. 
• Funeral homes and mortuaries; to obtain the Marin County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division Authorization for Release of Remains form for completion, please contact the Monte’s Chapel of the Hills staff (Marin County contracted morgue facility)  at 415-453-8440. The form will be provided for completion prior to subject release.
